Understanding How Omega 3 Works and Why it is important
There are several types of fatty acids, which are the basis of fats: saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. The most useful of these is polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC). They in turn contain two different groups: Omega-3 and Omega-6. Our body itself is not able to produce them.
The role of Omega-3 fatty acids, in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, has been studied in the 70 ies of the last century by Danish scientist Jorn Dyerberg. The researcher wondered why Greenland Eskimos, whose menu is replete with oily fish, so rarely had heart disease, and even heart attacks at all.
Once in the body with food, fatty acids Omega-3 are incorporated into the structure of cell membranes. This greatly improves their structure: operation activates cells, their improved nutrition and metabolism. This is especially important for the heart and brain cells, which are always under load.
The most important of total fatty acids are the Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) , Eicosapentaenoic (EPA), Docosahexaenoic (DHA).
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is not synthesized in the human body, it must be obtained from food.
DHA and EPA are the long chain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and: mackerel, tuna, herring, sardines, salmon, and seafood.
